Why you need a 4x4 for Mauna Kea

By Joe

Aloha, I'm putting this out there again because it's about safety on Mauna Kea.

I'm seeing posts about people going up the Mauna in AWD cars, without a 4x4 and 4-low, saying "they let me go up with an AWD car." That is dangerous. You need the 4-low transfer case to slow you down coming down the mountain so you don't ride your brakes.

I interviewed a ranger on the Mauna about safety, and of course about 4-low, and why you need a 4x4 for Mauna Kea.

Please be safe, and don't try to cheat safety.

Aloha, Joe
