What's the difference between Jeep types? Sport, Willys, Sahara, Rubicon
Aloha! Joe here at Big Island Jeep Rental. I thought I'd explain the differences between Jeep types like Rubicon, Willys and Sahara.
The basics
- All Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators are real 4x4s with a 4-low transfer case, which you need for Mauna Kea.
- Wranglers come in 2-door and 4-door. The 4-doors are called "Unlimited."
- Gladiators are all 4-door.
- Renegades are compact SUVs, not classic Wranglers. Nothing crazy cool about them, but they're better than a mid-size car.
Wrangler trims
- Sport: pretty basic.
- Willys: usually has off-road tires and some extra bells and whistles.
- Sahara: the deluxe one. It usually has an upgraded sound system, leather seats and color-matched fenders. More of a quiet cruiser, but still very capable off-road.
- Rubicon: the bad boy. Lifted higher from the factory, usually with bigger tires, a more aggressive look and better trim. It's at the top of the trim list.
Then there's everything in between: special editions built on a Sport or a Sahara with extra features.
